Durham Region is joining other municipalities across the country this week in celebrating Waste Reduction Week. Dani Luciano, Operations Technician at the Durham Region Works Department, says the focus is reducing all kinds of waste including food waste which can often be re-purposed for other meals. She says blue boxes and green bins do help divert some items from the garbage stream, but not all municipalities accept the same items. Contaminating blue boxes and green bins with items not accepted in the stream also costs money because they have to be removed for processing. Check the Durham Region website for acceptable items.
