Police have laid charges of impaired driving causing death against 36-year old Michael La Forty, the Oshawa man who was arrested following Wednesday morning's two-car crash at Taunton Rd. W. and Thornton Rd. It happened just after 2am when La Forty's black Honda Civic struck a grey Civic that was stopped at the intersection facing westbound. Upon impact, both vehicles ended up on the opposite side of the intersection. The victim was a 24-year old international student who was taken to hospital and died of his injuries. The intersection was closed for several hours while police reconstructed the incident and collected evidence. La Forty was found with a blood-alcohol reading exceeding 80 milligrams. The charges against him have not been proven; he was held for a bail hearing.
