Two people were pronounced dead, and an elderly woman was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a collision early yesterday morning in the Township of Scugog. It happened just before 8:15 at Simcoe St. and Old Simcoe Rd. when the driver of a northbound Ford Ranger lost control of the vehicle and struck a southbound Volkswagen. The Ranger became fully engulfed in flames and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the sedan was taken out of the vehicle; officers from North Division performed CPR, however, the 71-year old man from Lindsay succumbed to his injuries. A 71-year old female driver was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. Police believe speed may have been a contributing factor in the collision. The Durham Regional Police Traffic Services Branch and the Collision Investigation Unit were on scene to conduct the investigation. The road was closed while evidence was collected. Anyone with new new information, or who may have witnessed the crash, is asked to contact the Traffic Services Branch.
