The new Durham Region Council was sworn in last week, and meetings are currently being held to establish priorities. The new Regional Chair is John Henry, a former two-term mayor in Oshawa who pursued the position following the passing of longtime Regional Chair Roger Anderson, and the retirement of former Uxbridge Mayor Gerri-Lynn O'Connor, who was appointed to the position in the spring but announced she wasn't going to run for re-election. Henry says there's a good balance of councilors with professional and elected skills. Exactly one-half of the 28 councilors elected are newcomers at the regional level, with most having served as local councilors before the election last October.
