School Board Vote Sparks Controversy

Some strong backlash has resulted from a vote held by Durham District School Board trustees with regards to whether or not parents should be notified about any violent incident at school that affects their child or that occurs in the classroom. The result of the vote was an overwhelming "no," sparking anger from parents who believe they have a right to be informed. The motion to notify parents was first moved in December, then referred to the board's lawyers. A legal opinion offered at the board meeting last week said the motion "extends beyond the jurisdiction of trustees," and is not legally viable or advisable because it could violate privacy laws.
