History was made yesterday at Queen's Park in Toronto as the Transgender flag was raised for the first time over the Ontario Legislature. The gesture comes on the heels of the Federal Government's landmark passing of Bill C-16 last week, giving new protections to transgender Canadians. The Canadian Human Rights Act and Criminal Code will be updated to include gender identity and gender expression, and hate speech laws will be strengthened, making it illegal to target someone for being transgender.
