Durham Regional Police Services have provided an update on their Unmanned Aerial Vehicle program. An Aeryon Sky Ranger has been purchased for $132,000, and officers are being trained to use the technology to find missing persons and document vehicle collisions. Similar UAVs have already been purchased or deployed in York Region, Halton, Toronto, and by the OPP. Although police helicopters are used when more specialized equipment is needed, the UAVs can be used more effectively in certain situations, such as photographing a large collision scene. The Sky Ranger is expected to be deployed in Durham Region next month.
