Sweeping changes are coming to Ontario's labour laws, including an increase in the province's minimum wage to $15/hour. Premier Kathleen Wynne confirmed the details of the Liberal government's plan yesterday, to be rolled out over a period of 18 months. The current $11.40 minimum goes up to $11.60 in October due to a scheduled increase to offset inflation, then to $14/hour on January 1st of next year, followed by $15/hour the following year. The Premier says that 10% of Ontario's workforce currently earns the minimum wage, and 30% make less than $15/hour today.
