New guidelines pertaining to opioid prescriptions were released in the Canadian Medical Association Journal today.   The report stated that doctors should only prescribe opioids to treat very specific causes of chronic pain. Doctors were also strongly urged to try to wean their patients off of opioids due to their potentially addictive nature. The recommendations were among ten given to health care providers with a clear focus on reducing prescriptions, a clear departure from the previous guidelines issued seven years ago.
