Local Concerns Over Nuclear Materials

Durham Region residents are concerned about the possibility that some transport trucks containing nuclear material could be passing through the area on route to the United States. About 6,000 gallons of highly-enriched uranium would be shipped in liquid form from the Chalk River nuclear facility north of Ottawa to a plant in South Carolina. A Canada-US agreement stipulates that the material is to be returned once it is no longer needed in Canada. Up to 150 shipments over four years may be necessary to complete the delivery. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission says the shipment would pose minimal risk to the public.
