Be Wary Of Phone Scam

Staff at Durham Regional Police Services say they've been receiving about two dozen calls per day from residents reporting that they have been contacted by phone by a person claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency. The person tells the resident that they owe a substantial amount of back taxes, and threatens that if monies are not paid, they will be arrested. They will often attempt to negotiate a payment for a lesser amount, collected by way of a third-party credit card of prepaid gift card. The CRA is reminding taxpayers that they will never request payments by these methods, or leave or ask for personal information via voice mail, email, or text.
